Open Impeller

For "open impellers" made of "carbon steel," sand casting is a classic and common choice.

Description

Why Choose Sand Casting

Advantages: Carbon steel has a high melting point (above approximately 1500°C), and sand molds offer excellent refractoriness. Sand casting is not limited by part size, and mold costs are low, making it suitable for medium to small batch or custom non-standard products such as impellers.

Challenges: Open impellers have open spaces between blades, with thin blade sections and complex geometries. In sand molds, filling the blade areas is difficult, leading to common defects such as insufficient pouring or cold shuts.

If your product has an issue, first check the following points:

Porosity/pinholes: Check mold permeability, steel preheating level, and whether deoxidizing agents have been added.

Cracks: Carbon steel has high shrinkage; thin sections of the blade are prone to hot cracking during cooling. Optimize the mold opening time to avoid excessive cooling.

Inclusions: Open impellers have fast pouring flow rates, which can easily carry inclusions. Use filters or slag dams.

Surface roughness: Check sand grain fineness and coating thickness.
